Class Christmas Party Ideas Kids (and Parents) Will Love
Posted by Ally Patterson
The class holiday party always lands in the busiest stretch of the year. Winter concerts, gift shopping, and work deadlines all pile up the same week. Then you remember you’re the room parent and the party is in nine days.
This guide covers the party itself: formats that fit each grade, games and craft stations that work in a classroom, snacks that pass school rules, and how to handle gift exchanges and the teacher gift.
Ask the teacher what the school calls the party before you plan anything. Many public schools hold a “winter party” or “holiday party” instead of a Christmas party, and the name shapes the decorations, music, and games you pick. Winter themes like snowmen, mittens, and cocoa work for every family. For the youngest grades, skip anything that ties gifts to Santa, since some kids believe and some don’t.
Holiday Class Party Ideas by Grade
A party that thrills a kindergartner bores a fifth grader. Use this table to match the party format to the age, then pick from the themes, games, and stations below.
Grade
Party Format That Works
Watch Out For
Preschool and Kindergarten
45 minutes, one game, one craft, snack in the middle
Glitter, small parts, and games with lots of rules
Grades 1 to 3
One hour with three rotating stations and a group game
Sugary snacks right before an active game
Grades 4 and 5
Team competitions like Minute to Win It or a gingerbread build-off
Crafts that feel babyish; give them choices
Middle School
Build-your-own snack bar, a student playlist, and opt-in games
Forcing everyone into the loud games
A few party themes that work across grades:
Winter Wonderland. Paper snowflakes, white tablecloths, and a “snowball” fight with crumpled paper. Works for any grade and any family.
Pajama and Cocoa Party. Kids wear pajamas, bring a blanket, and watch a short holiday movie with popcorn. Check the school’s movie rules first, since many require a G rating.
Santa’s Workshop. Each table is a different “workshop” station, like ornaments, wrapping, and cookie decorating. Kids rotate every 10 minutes.
Gingerbread Build-Off. Teams of three or four build a house from graham crackers, frosting, and candy. Give awards for sturdiest, tastiest-looking, and most creative so every team wins something.
Early New Year’s Eve. Party hats, noisemakers, and a countdown to “midnight” at 2:30 p.m. A good fit for classes that don’t do a Christmas party.
Holiday Class Party Games
Plan one active game and one quiet game. That’s usually enough for a one-hour party. Every game below works in a classroom with desks pushed aside.
Snowball Toss. Kids toss cotton balls or crumpled white paper into buckets from different distances. Score by bucket and let teams compete.
Mitten Unwrap Race. Wrap a small prize in several layers of paper. Kids wear thick mittens and take turns unwrapping until the music stops. Whoever unwraps the last layer keeps the prize.
Holiday Minute to Win It. Kids get 60 seconds per game. Stack red and green cups into a tree, toss jingle bells into a cup, or move cotton ball “snowballs” from one bowl to another with a spoon.
Holiday Bingo. Print cards with winter and holiday pictures. Use candy or cereal as markers and keep small prizes on hand.
Freeze Dance. Play holiday songs and freeze when the music stops. It’s perfect for burning off energy before snack time, especially for younger kids.
Holiday Charades. Write songs, movies, and winter actions on cards, like “building a snowman” or “sledding.” Older kids can write their own.
Three Guesses. Pair kids up with a small wrapped item in a bag. Each partner gets three yes-or-no questions to guess what’s inside.
Holiday Trivia. Split the class into teams and run a quick quiz. Our Christmas trivia questions include kid-friendly options.
Stations keep a room of 25 excited kids under control. Split the class into three or four groups, set a timer for 10 minutes, and rotate. Each station needs one adult. That’s the easiest volunteer job to fill, since parents know exactly what they’re signing up for.
Station ideas that fit inside a party:
Photo ornament. Kids decorate a paper or wood frame ornament. The teacher adds a class photo with the year after the party.
Cookie decorating. Plain sugar cookies with two or three frostings and sprinkles. Line tables with plastic cloths first.
Paper snowman. White paper plates or clay, plus buttons, felt scarves, and googly eyes.
Jingle bell necklaces. Pipe cleaners and bells for younger kids. Older kids can braid yarn bracelets in holiday colors.
Ornament exchange. Each kid decorates a paper ornament, then swaps it with a classmate during the last five minutes of the party.
Photo booth. A plain backdrop, a few props like Santa hats, scarves, and paper snowflakes, and a parent with a phone. Send the photos to families after the party.
Genius Tip
Make each station its own slot on your sign up, with the supplies listed in the description. A parent who signs up for "Cookie Station, 2:00 to 3:00, bring 30 sugar cookies and sprinkles" knows exactly what to do. Set slot limits to one per station so you don't end up with four parents at the cookie table and nobody running bingo.
Check the school’s food rules before you plan the menu. Many schools require store-bought food with ingredient labels, and some classrooms are nut-free. The teacher will know which students have allergies.
Keep it to one or two sweet treats and fill out the rest with simple, festive snacks:
Grinch fruit skewers. A green grape, a banana slice, a strawberry, and a mini marshmallow on a stick.
Snowman string cheese. Draw a face on the wrapper with a marker.
Reindeer snack bags. Pretzels and popcorn in a brown bag with paper antlers and a red pom-pom nose.
Candy cane fruit plate. Strawberry and banana slices lined up in a candy cane shape.
Hot cocoa cups, if the class has a microwave and the teacher approves. Otherwise, serve chocolate milk boxes.
Popcorn “snow.” Plain popcorn with white chocolate drizzle, store-bought if the school requires it.
Turn each item into a slot on your sign up with the quantity listed, like “fruit skewers for 26.” Add separate slots for plates, napkins, cups, and wipes. Those are the items that go unclaimed most often.
Class Gift Exchanges and Teacher Gifts
Gift exchanges can be the highlight of the party or the moment a kid goes home upset. Clear rules make the difference.
Set a firm price limit. $5 is common. Put it in writing so no family feels pressure to spend more.
Make every gift work for anyone. Ask for gifts any kid in the class would enjoy, like books, art supplies, puzzles, or small games.
Pick a fair swap. Drawing numbers and choosing from a pile works well. Skip “steal” rules for kids under 4th grade, since they lead to tears.
Bring two or three extra gifts. Someone always forgets, and nobody should leave empty-handed.
Try a book exchange instead. Each child brings one wrapped book. It’s simple, low cost, and every kid goes home with something to read over break.
For the teacher gift, one group gift from the whole class beats 25 mugs. Pool money from families who want to give, buy something the teacher will use, and add a card everyone signs. Our guide to organizing a group gift for a teacher covers amounts, gift ideas, and how to keep it optional.
Collect the class teacher gift online. No cash envelopes in backpacks.
Families chip in any amount they choose, and you see the total in one place. Close the collection a few days before the party so you have time to shop and sign the card.
What should I plan for a class Christmas party? Plan one active game, one quiet game or craft, and a snack break. That’s enough to fill a one-hour party without rushing. Add a gift exchange or photo booth if you have time and the teacher agrees.
I’m a new room parent. How do I get other parents to help with the holiday party? Ask for specific jobs with clear times, like “run the cookie station from 2:00 to 3:00.” Vague requests for “any help” rarely get answers. An online sign up lets parents pick a slot in a few seconds, and automatic reminders go out before the party so nobody forgets.
What food should I bring to a class Christmas party? Simple, store-bought snacks are safest, since many schools require labels. Fruit skewers, popcorn, string cheese, and one sweet treat like decorated cookies work well. Always check with the teacher about allergies first.
How long should a class holiday party be? Most class holiday parties run 45 minutes to an hour. Younger kids do best with the shorter end, while older grades can handle a full hour with a few stations. Ask the teacher how much time the class has before winter break and plan two or three activities to fit.
How much should kids spend on a class gift exchange? $5 is a common limit. Put the limit in a note to families and ask for gifts any child would enjoy, like books or art supplies. Bring two or three extra gifts in case someone forgets.
When should I send the class party sign up? About three weeks before the party. Since most holiday parties happen right before winter break, that usually means late November. This gives families time to plan around a busy December and gives you a week to fill any gaps.
How do we give the teacher a holiday gift from the whole class? Collect money from families who want to give, then buy one gift and add a card the kids can sign. Collecting online with Group Gifts keeps it simple and lets each family give what they’re comfortable with.
How to Plan a Class Party
Volunteer roles, food sign ups, and a day-of checklist for any class party.
I just wanted to say thank you to the SignUpGenius team for such a fabulous website. I have been organizing a Christmas giving event at my office for almost 15 years. When I first started, I printed off "angels" and typed in wish lists for each kid and mom to be adopted for Christmas gift. ... Last year, I used SignUpGenius for the first time for my event. It has made a significant impact on organizing this event, saving me hours and hours of time. Plus, it allowed me to easily distribute information about the event. It has taken away much of the stress of coordinating this event, and I am able to reflect more on why I do this rather than stress over the details.
