Starting a book club is easy. Keeping one going is the hard part. Most clubs fall apart in the first few months, usually because nobody nailed down the basics up front: who's coming, how often you're meeting, and what happens once everyone's actually in the room. Get those right, and the rest takes care of itself.
Before you invite anyone, decide what you actually want out of this. A club built for catching up with old friends looks different from one built to dig into serious nonfiction. That decision shapes who you invite, where you meet, and how the conversation goes.
Start with a short list of people you'd genuinely enjoy talking books with like neighbors, coworkers, people from your kids' school, whoever fits the vibe you're going for. Somewhere between six and twelve members tends to work best.
