👉 Running the stand for the first time?
For budgets, equipment, volunteer shifts, cash handling, and a game-day checklist, start with the full concession stand guide.
Read the guide to running a concession standThe best concession stand food is quick to serve, simple to price, and easy to eat in the bleachers. Most stands do well with a short menu: a few drinks, a few grab-and-go snacks, and one or two hot items people can smell from the parking lot.
Use the ideas below to build a menu that fits your sport, your equipment, and the volunteers you have.
Packaged snacks are the backbone of most stands. They need no cooking, they keep for weeks, and a brand-new volunteer can sell them on their first shift. If your venue doesn’t allow cooking, you can build a whole menu from this section and the drinks below.
| Item | Why it sells | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Chips and pretzels | Cheap, filling, and easy to grab between plays | Buy variety packs in bulk so you can see which flavors move |
| Candy bars and gummies | Kids can buy them with pocket change | Keep chocolate out of the sun on hot days |
| Sunflower seeds | A dugout and bleacher favorite at baseball and softball games | Stock single-serve bags in a few flavors |
| Individually wrapped pickles | A surprise best seller at youth sports, and athletes love the salt | Keep them in a cooler and sell them in their pouch |
| Granola bars and snack cakes | Works for early morning games and tournaments | Choose a few nut-free brands and label them |
| Freeze pops | Costs pennies each and sells fast in the heat | Freeze them at home and carry them in a cooler with ice packs |
These are the foods people expect when they walk up to the window. Each one needs some equipment, so start with the items your stand already has the gear for. One or two hot items is plenty for most stands.
| Item | What you need | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Hot dogs | Roller grill, slow cooker, or a pot of hot water | Offer chili or cheese as a small add-on to raise your average sale |
| Popcorn | Popcorn machine and bags | Usually your best profit on hot food, and the smell brings people to the line |
| Nachos with cheese | Cheese warmer or slow cooker, chip trays | A pump-style cheese dispenser keeps portions even and the line moving |
| Soft pretzels | Pretzel warmer or oven | Buy frozen and bake in small batches so none go stale |
| Pizza slices | Insulated delivery bags | Buy whole pies from a local pizzeria and ask about a team discount |
| Burgers | Grill and a volunteer who knows how to use it | Best for big games. Check venue and health rules before you plan on grilling. |
One unusual item can become the thing your stand is known for. These ideas use simple equipment and sell well because fans can’t get them at every game.
| Item | How to make it work | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Walking tacos | Spoon taco meat and toppings into a single-serve chip bag. No plates needed. | Football and fall night games |
| Chili cheese cups | Keep chili hot in a slow cooker and serve over chips or fries in a cup | Cold-weather games |
| Flavored popcorn | Set out ranch, cheddar, or cinnamon sugar shakers next to plain popcorn | Indoor games where popcorn already sells |
| Breakfast burritos | Wrap in foil and hold in a warmer or cooler bag | Early Saturday tournaments |
| Donut holes | Order from a local bakery the morning of and sell by the bag | Morning games with coffee |
| Snow cones | Rent or borrow a shaved ice machine and stock two or three syrups | Summer leagues and outdoor festivals |
Drinks are often the best profit at the whole stand. They need no prep, they’re easy to price, and almost everyone buys one. Buy in bulk at a warehouse store and keep extras on ice so you never run out mid-game.
| Drink | Best season | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Bottled water | Year-round | Your top seller at hot games. Stock more than you think you need. |
| Sports drinks | Spring and summer | Athletes and siblings buy them after games |
| Canned soda | Year-round | Check school rules. Some campuses limit sugary drinks during the school day. |
| Hot cocoa | Fall and winter nights | Costs very little per cup and sells out on cold nights |
| Coffee | Morning games and tournaments | Parents at 7 a.m. games will thank you. A rented coffee urn works fine. |
| Lemonade | Summer | Mix from powder in a drink dispenser and sell by the cup |
Sweets are easy to sell to kids and easy to stock. Baked goods are the biggest money-maker of all when families donate them, because nearly every dollar is profit.
Genius Tip
Make a sign up where each family picks a game and a baked good to bring. You'll know what's coming before the gates open, and you won't end up with five trays of brownies and no cookies.
Learn how easy it is to create a free sign upA few lighter choices give parents something to buy for their kids and athletes something to eat between games. Allergy-friendly items also make your stand a safe stop for families who often skip it.
Sell allergy-friendly items in their original packaging so families can read the label. Store them away from other food and use separate tongs or gloves when you handle them. Leave out any claim that something is “allergen-free” unless the package says so.
A few non-food items can bring in money on nights when food sales are slow. Pick what matches the weather and the crowd.
👉 Selling team gear too? Take spirit wear orders online before the season starts
Set up an online store for shirts, hats, and team gear so families can order ahead and you don't have to guess sizes at the window.
See how to sell spirit wearWhat sells depends a lot on the game. A cold Friday night in October calls for a different menu than a hot Saturday baseball doubleheader.
| Event | Best sellers | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Football | Hot cocoa, coffee, hot dogs, nachos, walking tacos, hand warmers | A big halftime rush. Have food ready before the second quarter ends. |
| Baseball and softball | Sunflower seeds, bubble gum, sports drinks, freeze pops, hot dogs | Long games with steady sales. Keep drinks cold all afternoon. |
| Basketball and volleyball | Popcorn, pizza slices, candy, bottled water | Sales between games and at halftime. Check gym rules about food in the bleachers. |
| Soccer and all-day tournaments | Coffee, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, fruit, water | Families stay for hours and need lunch. Plan for a second wave of hot food. |
| School fairs and carnivals | Cotton candy, popcorn, lemonade, walking tacos, snow cones | Lots of kids buying small items. Keep prices round and the menu short. |
| Summer leagues | Freeze pops, snow cones, water, sports drinks, sunscreen | Heat. Bring extra ice and keep chocolate out of the sun. |
A good rule is to charge two to three times what each item costs you. That covers spills, spoiled food, and the occasional free snack for a volunteer’s kid. Round to whole dollars when you can, or to quarters if you have to. Round prices keep the line moving and make cash easier to count.
The ranges below are typical for school and youth sports stands. Prices vary by region, so check what nearby schools and leagues charge before you set your own.
| Item | Typical price | Profit note |
|---|---|---|
| Bottled water | $1 to $2 | High profit when bought by the case |
| Sports drinks and soda | $2 to $3 | Steady profit, and it adds up over a season |
| Hot cocoa and coffee | $1 to $2 | Very high profit. Cups and mix cost little. |
| Candy and chips | $1 to $2 | Good profit with no waste |
| Popcorn | $1 to $3 | Often the highest profit on the menu |
| Hot dogs and pretzels | $2 to $4 | Good profit if you don't overcook. Leftovers cut into it. |
| Nachos, pizza, and walking tacos | $3 to $5 | Lower profit per item, but a bigger sale each time |
| Donated baked goods | $1 to $2 | Nearly all profit |
The most profitable items are usually drinks, popcorn, hot cocoa, and donated baked goods. Hot food brings people to the window and raises your average sale, but it also creates the most waste. Track what’s left at the end of each game and cut back on anything you keep throwing away.
Take card payments at the window with your phone
With SignUpGenius Online Stores, you can add your menu items and accept in-person payments with Tap on Mobile or a Bluetooth card reader. Fans can tap a card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. It's included on every plan, including Free.
See how Online Stores handle in-person salesIf this is your first season, start small. A menu of eight to ten items is enough to make money without overwhelming your volunteers. Once you know what sells, add one new item at a time.
| Category | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drinks | Bottled water, one sports drink, hot cocoa on cold nights | Your easiest profit, with no prep |
| Packaged snacks | Chips, two or three candy options, sunflower seeds | Any volunteer can sell them on day one |
| Hot item | Hot dogs or popcorn (pick one) | Draws a line without needing much equipment |
| Sweets | Donated baked goods | Nearly all profit, and families like to help |
| Allergy-friendly | Fruit cups and gluten-free pretzels | Gives every family something to buy |
Once your menu is set, the next step is filling every shift. The concession stand guide covers volunteer roles, cash handling, permits, and a game-day checklist.
I’m running the concession stand for my kid’s team. What food sells best?
Drinks, candy, chips, and one hot item like hot dogs or popcorn sell well almost everywhere. After that, it depends on the sport and the weather. Hot cocoa and nachos win at fall football games, while sunflower seeds and freeze pops win at summer baseball. Start with a short menu and track what sells after each game.
What are the most profitable concession stand items?
Bottled water, hot cocoa, coffee, and popcorn usually make the most profit per sale because they cost so little. Donated baked goods are nearly all profit. Hot food like nachos and pizza brings in bigger sales but has more waste, so watch your leftovers.
How should I price concession stand food?
Charge about two to three times what each item costs you, then round to whole dollars or quarters. Look at what nearby schools and leagues charge so your prices feel fair to families. If you take card payments with Online Stores, you can still post round prices so cash and card sales stay simple.
What can I sell if our concession stand isn’t allowed to cook?
Stick to packaged snacks, bottled drinks, and donated baked goods that come wrapped. Chips, candy, sunflower seeds, fruit cups, granola bars, pickles in a pouch, and freeze pops all work with just a cooler. Pizza from a local shop is another option, since it’s cooked off site.
How do I keep pizza and pretzels warm at a concession stand?
For pizza, keep whole pies in insulated delivery bags and pull out one at a time. For pretzels, use a warmer or bake small batches every 20 to 30 minutes so nothing sits too long. A slow cooker on low also works for hot dogs and cheese sauce.
How do I make hot chocolate for a concession stand?
Fill a large coffee urn or insulated drink dispenser with hot water, then mix in powdered cocoa by the batch or let buyers stir in a packet. Serve it in cups with lids so kids can carry it back to the bleachers. A large tub of mix makes dozens of cups for just a few dollars.
How much food should I buy for my first few games?
Buy enough for your first two or three games, not the whole season. Use your expected crowd size as a guide, then adjust once you see what sells out and what’s left over. The concession stand guide walks through how to build a budget from your attendance.
Can a concession stand take credit cards?
Yes. With SignUpGenius Online Stores, you can take in-person payments with Tap on Mobile or a Bluetooth card reader. Fans can pay with a card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. It’s included on every plan, including Free, so you can take cash and cards at the same window.
